Gary Richards' 67

Gary , one of our Club Prospects , has been putting this 67 together for the last couple of years . It was originally a non welded car that Alex Taylor from Defcon-3 sourced , via his friend Walter at The Bug Box in Germany . Alex travelled to Germany and drove the car back to the UK .

Gary was looking for a good base car to build his dream 67 , and bought the car from Alex . Any small areas of corrosion were dealt with by Alex at Defcon3 . Gary spent many many hours down at Alex's workshop cleaning off the old factory underseal and prepping the underneath of the car , so that it could be painted and detailed .

Colin at www.kustomkolors.co.uk painted the car Savannah Beige .

The engine was in a 63 Beetle previously owned by club member Tim Cooper . Gary had bought this car a couple of years ago , but the lust for a 67 proved too much for him . So the 63 was sold with a stock engiine and gearbox , and the Rancho Pro-street gearbox and 2165cc engine were fitted into the 67 .

The engine required a bit of a freshen up , as it had a partial freshen up when Tim Cooper owned it in the 63 . Gary wanted if fully gone through , so the lifter bores , that had a bit of wear , were sleeved with ally bushes . The valve guides were also showing signs of wear . These were also fitted with Cosworth inserts by James Calvert at Stateside Tuning . James also recut the valve seats with a 3 angle valve job and cut the valves also .

The engine case was looking grubby after 10 years use and 50,000 miles , so it was Soda Blasted to get it looking spotless once more . Then the engine was reassembled . Gary prepped and painted the barrels with high temp black paint . he also prepped and painted the Scat 2qt deep sump as he liked the look .

The engine had previously run with Weber 44 IDF's , but for Cal-Look properness , some Weber 48 IDA's were fitted on match ported tall manifolds , gusseted for strength .

The engine is 2165cc , with CB Street Eliminator heads ( 40 x 35.5 valves ) . Running 10.1 to 1 compression ratio . CB 5.4" H Beam Rods . The heads are fitted with the new CB VW650 valve springs , with an Engle FK10 camshaft with CB 30mm lightweight 2 peice lifters .
